Games
Again a flat field image of a games workshop, you can see the reflection of the surrounding Architecture in the photograph. This was taken during the summer last year. I quite like the dual visual systems of reflected images and projected image. There is even a small convex mirror in the top right of the shop which reflects an images of the internal aisles.

Murphys
Murphys grocery is right beside another more modern newsagents in Dublin. The shop seems to be from a bygone age. They seem to stock vast supplies of squeeze orange juice, and lyons tea.
This was selected for Exhibition in the RHA annual Exhibition along with two other photographs.

Mulligans
Mulligans, is up near Donore Avenue. It is opposite St.Theresa’s Gardens. The Gardens were named after the Marion Year of 1954. Fatima Mansions, St. Michaels are similarly inspired by the Marion Year.
This was exhibited in the RHA as a set of retail themed images. The photograph was taken when I was working on Donore Avenue Sports centre for Martin Henhcion of Henchion Reuter.

Ushers Island
” Snow is general all over Ireland” : James Joyce’s short story ‘The Dead’ is set on the feast of the Epiphany in 15 Ushers Island 1904. The house was restored in 2002 by Brendan Kilty SC. This is a selection of photographs from the restoration.
The house is described as ” dark….guant” by Joyce. The Dead plots the social geography of Dublin at turn of the 19th century . It is now over one hundred since the scenes in The Dead took place.
The Dead was published as part of “Dubliners” his collection of short stories. The predominant theme of the collection is of “Paralysis” . Dublin is a remnant of the British Empire, once the second city in the kingdom. It is now a fading city. Joyce wrote that he wanted the final story in Dubliners to be a positive account of life in the city. The story tells of a party for friends, family and music students on the feast of the Epiphany. As the story unfolds to reveals the personal struggle of the characters, the story is filled with amusement, pathos and loss.

Goulding House
More from the archive, The Goulding Summer House house was restored in 2002 by Frank Fahey of Scott Tallon Walker. The house was originally designed by in 1972 By Ronnie Tallon of STW. The steelwork was constructed by Sisk, Goulding himself supposedly put in much of the Glass and Cedar. I photographed it in 2002 for STW during the world cup finals. There are more images in colour on my main website www.paultierney.com I quite like the black and white images, they seem appropriate for the structure. John Donat took the first images in the 70’s. The AJ published an article by in July 2002 with an article by Andrew Mead. Image Magazine published a great essay by Ellen Rowley on the history and design of the structure.
